ROVA Adventure Nineteen, June/July 2020
At ROVA, our fingers are firmly crossed that science and community solidarity will get us past the current crisis as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we’re hoping that the stories in this edition keep you dreaming of adventure, and looking towards a time when we can enjoy the great outdoors again.
In this spirit, this edition of ROVA brings you stories of perseverance, from Leanne Hoffman’s musings on learning to live with loneliness, to Chris Simon’s tales of an overlanding life on the road with a strict German father, and Samantha Larson’s insight into the psychological benefits of rock climbing.
Patrick McGuire’s timely article looks at how we can responsibly explore in a warming world; Brolin Winning reminds us about the beauty of the forgotten RV—the truck cap—as a simple way to get outdoors; and John Garry examines the flummoxing human behavior of living our travels through a phone’s screen. Accompany Julia Thimberg Silfwerling on a pop-culture road trip from Jacksonville, Florida, to Bangor, Maine; learn about the best bird-watching regions in the country with Bruce B. Billings; and read the sweet story of Kiana and Dave, a couple who got married in a campground.
While we know that you can’t necessarily visit the destinations in our Places feature at the moment, we hope that they offer you plenty of inspiration for your future travels. From Arizona’s Lake Havasu City to wine country in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and from Denver to Delaware, we cover some surprising, resilient and enticing regions that will shoot onto your must-visit list.
